It’s treacherous to be a tool for political violence – Sheikh Aremeyaw
The spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu has expressed that personally, being turned into an apparatus for political brutality by a government official is quite treacherous.
He was speaking at a Peace Advocacy Symposium Towards a Peaceful 2020 General Election in Ghana held by the Baraka Policy Institute on Saturday November 7, 2020 at the Teachers’ Hall, in Accra.
As indicated by the Sheikh Aremeyaw, some legislators utilize existing fights of religion and ethnicity to prompt violence.
“You sometimes hear them chant war songs. They pitch tribe against tribe. They take advantage of the youth’s vulnerability and how they are not well-informed and incite them to violence.”
We need training like this to change the outlook of youth about brutality. The adolescent should be focused to the point of dismissing savagery as men of acquiring political force, he added.
“At a compilation of voters’ register, someone was stabbed. This was not necessary. People are stabbed, wounded, beaten because of politics. Violence is evil, it destroys, inflicts pain both physical and psychological” he continued.
He urged the crowd present to be each other’s keeper, and furthermore apply the brilliant guideline of doing unto others what we need others to do unto us.
“As individuals we should do as we might want others to do unto us. Come December 7, 2020, we should choose the one that speaks to the overall good and it’s my expectation that no blood will be shed.”
Sheikh Aremeyaw Shuaib, who is also a member of the National Peace Council is among a number of clergymen in Ghana who have consistently called on all and sundry to ensure peace before during and after elections.
