Slots for Africa Women's World cup tripled to six

FIFA tripled Africa's tiers from three to six at the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 to be held in Australia and New Zealand.

The decision was one of the major decisions taken on Thursday 24 December by the Bureau of the FIFA Council to discuss the fate of the upcoming FIFA competitions.

Africa had three direct slots in the past, which were given at the Africa Women's Championship to the top three performing teams.

As a result of the expansion of the competing teams from 24 to 32 teams, the new decision will mean that Africa will have four direct slots and two other playoff battles.

Australia and New Zealand, the two host countries, will automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup and their slots have been drawn directly from the quotas allocated to their confederations, namely the AFC and the OFC.

There will therefore be 29 slots for which the rest of the confederations will fight.
