Techiman South figures would have taken election to a run-off - NDC

Dr. Justice Moses Aheto, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) collation team says the election would have gone through a run-off if the Electoral Commission had added results from the contested Techiman South constituency.

The party strongly believes that including the figures of that constituency may have led to an outright second round because the New Patriotic Party (NPP) president-elect, Akufo-Addo, would not have received the 50 percent plus one vote to be declared the winner of the polls.

Speaking on The Major Issue on Citi TV, the reckless exclusion by Mr Aheto of the EC of the results of the Techiman South constituency in the Bono East area in the estimation of the final results is incorrect.

He clarified that the independent estimates of the party based on the EC's own data imply that the supposed addition of all the votes cast in the constituency to that already secured by its nominee, John Mahama, as suggested by the EC, would have forced the presidential elections into a run-off.

“The EC made it clear that they have not added Techiman South figures which is 128,018 and said even if they give the whole of that to Mahama, there was no way, he would have won. But if you do the percentage computation, Nana Addo would have obtained 49.265% while Mahama would have obtained 46.76% of the valid votes cast. This is a straight run-off. This is where the issue is. One of the strong but very irresponsible statements they made was that the [exclusion] does not change the percentage stated for each candidate and the declaration made by the chairperson. No matter what, once you change the denominator, you can’t get the same percentages”, he argued.

The results of the polls were announced by the EC without explaining to the disputed Techiman South constituency that, even though all the votes in the region were added to John Dramani Mahama's results, the outcome of the presidential election would not have changed.
