GMA cautions gov't to limit social activities as spread of Covid-19 is still on the rise

In order to reduce the spread of the new coronavirus in the country, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has asked the government to limit social gatherings such as parties, church services, funerals and others.
The GMA also instructed the government to put safety measures in place at market locations.
Due to the recent spread of the virus, a press statement released by the GMA in Accra on Monday stated that the Covid-19 pandemic was still a major health hazard for all citizens living in the world.
The statement signed jointly by the President, Dr Frank Ankobea, and the General Secretary of the GMA, Dr Justice Yankson, stated that the pandemic has the potential to further undermine the already fragile health systems in the country and needs to be monitored.
It claimed that non-adherence to the preventive measures of Covid-19 had the potential to further intensify the spread of the disease.
The declaration called on the government to reduce the number of people attending the late President Jerry John Rawlings' state funeral and to allow individuals to monitor proceedings on television and other social media channels.
It also requested the government to ensure the timely, continued supply and sufficient distribution to all health staff in different health institutions of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
"Suppliers and suppliers of different types of PPEs, particularly face masks, should not take advantage of the new increase in COVID-19 cases and the increasing demand for their products by scaling up the process, which will not benefit the country in our quest to defeat the virus in the long run," he added.
The declaration urged Ghanaians to be screened for all flu-like symptoms and to refrain from self-medication as much as possible, stressing the need for all to adhere to all safety steps.
