Perpetrators of fire outbreak at Aboabo station apprehended

Two people have been arrested by the Manhyia Divisional Police Command in the Ashanti Region in connection with a fire incident at Aboabo Station in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

To support the police in their inquiries, they were locked behind bars.

The two of them, Kofi Gyimah, a 37-year-old electric welder, and Paul Kwasi Kwakye, a 51-year-old shop owner, are believed to be responsible for the outbreak.

On Sunday morning, the electric welder was said to have been hired by the shop owner to work at his shop and while in the process, fire started from the shop and spread through the building that houses other shops.

In the early hours of Sunday, January 10, 2021, over thirty shops located in a commercial building at Aboabo station in Kumasi were destroyed by fire.

Aboabo fire

One of the busiest commercial facilities in the city where plastic products and other assorted consumables are sold is the building that houses over 100 stores and warehouses.

As the spreading fire ravaged property running into millions of Ghanaian cedis, fire officers had a hectic time getting the situation under control.

Ashanti Ghana National Fire Service Regional Public Relations Officer D. O III Ackah Desmond told reporters that after an inspection is done as part of their inquiries, the building will be pulled down.
