Samuel Atta-Kyea narrates how he became friends with late JJ Rawlings

Samuel Atta-Kyea, MP for Abuakwa south

In a tribute to the late former president, Jerry John Rawlings, Samuel Atta-Kyea, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, detailed how he became friends with the founder of the NDC.

Atta-Kyea recounted the tale of how a call by Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings to represent Jerry John Rawlings in a civil case gave birth to their relationship in his tribute that was captured in the brochure.

He says, "What brought together a well-known NPP Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, who is also a lawyer with considerable legal practice and the founder of NDC and Flt Lt JJ Rawlings (Rtd), Ghana's longest-serving head of state?" ”

He continues, "Well, it was our departed former president's unflagging wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, who had me consider putting my legal expertise at her husband's disposal regarding the launch of a book by my own kinsman, Prof. Kwaku Danso-Boafo, titled 'JJ Rawlings and the Democratic Transition in Ghana.'"

As recorded in 2014, Rawlings engaged Professor Danso-Boafo to write his biography.

Having won his trust, Rawlings confidently disclosed some critical details to Professor Danso-Boafo.

This knowledge was not supposed to be in the book, but Professor Danso-Boafo caught those statements in the book, according to Rawlings' own account.

Atta-services Kyea's were retained to put an injunction on the book following many failed efforts to have him delete and correct what Rawlings found to be misrepresentations.

Atta-Kyea notes that some finality was added to the case after two months of back and forth and Rawlings's demands were granted.

Rawlings offered to pay Atta-Kyea for his service, but as he found it a privilege to represent the longest-serving leader in the history of the nation, he declined.

Atta-Kyea notes that his relationship with Rawlings grew from here, but when Rawlings offered him great assistance in the NPP primaries in 2015, it was sent a notch higher.

I was extremely moved by his humanity and kindness when he sent an emissary to me with good money for the political undertaking in the very gruelling primaries for the Abuakwa South Constituency in 2015, and blessed me to win. Indeed, my win at Apapam was a landslide as I triumphed over the two other contestants.

He concluded by asking God to take care of Rawlings' wife and his children by praying for him.
