Mr Andani, ET Mensah and Ras Mubarak

On Friday, 12 February 2021, elections for new regional members to the Council of State were held by the Electoral Commission.

The exercise enshrined in Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution in Paragraph (C) of Clause 2 resulted in 102 candidates from 16 regions filing to contest the elections held in all regional capitals throughout the country.

After polls were collected, interesting turnouts were reported in the results.

A high point of the exercise was the 100 percent support of the former Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament, Enoch Teye Mensah, an NDC nominee who stood against six other candidates for the Council's Greater Accra regional representation.

After contesting against Abdul-Rashid Mohammed, Mahamoud Tahiru Zunglana and Alhassan Andani, who is the immediate past Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Bank Ghana, former Kumbungu Member of Parliament Ras Mubarak polled zero votes.

Mahamoud Tahiru Zunglana emerged victorious after the polls with 23 votes, while the former Stanbic boss voted eight to come second.

There was just one vote for Abdul Rashid-Mohammed.

The results from the Western Region were related, and the elections would therefore be re-run, although Bono East did not take place due to an injunction.

Here is the list of elected officials to represent the 16 regions of Ghana in the Council of State:

Role of the State Council

As set out in the 1992 constitution, the representatives of the Ghanaian Council of State have a responsibility to advise the President on national issues and governance.

A former Chief Justice of Ghana, a former Chief of Staff of Defence and a former Inspector General of Police are members of the Board.

Along with the elected members of each region of Ghana, the president of the National House of Chiefs is also part of the body.
