Ghanaian law students who left Ghana and decided to study law in the West African nation were 65 percent of the lawyers called to the Gambia Bar in 2021.

At a ceremony held in Banjul, the capital of the Gambia, the new lawyers, mostly Ghanaians, were admitted to the position of Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of The Gambia.

Out of thirty-eight (38) lawyers who were admitted to the country's bar on Monday, twenty-five (25) were called to the bar by Ghanaians. The President of the Gambia Bar Association congratulated the new members of the Gambia Bar and encouraged them to respect the name of their profession and to consider doing more to provide justice.

Since then, congratulations have come from their colleagues in Ghana to the new lawyers, led by the umbrella body of law students, the Ghana National Association of Law Students, who have criticized the scheme.

Undoubtedly, this news will reopen the discussion on the need for changes in Ghana's legal education system. Two years ago, Sophia Akuffo, then Chief Justice, who was the Chairperson of the General Legal Counsel, told the body appointed to govern legal education that the door to law school entry will remain closed and secure.

This was after the suspected passing of 128 out of 1820 students who sat for the entrance exam for admission into the Ghana School of Law that year. There is no conspiracy to admit fewer students, the General Legal Council (GLC) has said.

A two-hour paper that is focused on about ten law courses is the Law School Entrance Exam in Ghana. The completion of an LL.B and the completion of the full exams are one of the conditions for taking the examination.

According to those who talked to this portal, some who are enrolled in the Law School have their own concerns beyond admission, which are not being answered.
