Let's convert coconut waste into usable products - Cerath Dev't Organization
CDO |
The Cerath Development Organization (CDO) has revealed that a common solid waste in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality is coconut husks(waste) due to the high consumption of coconuts, facilitated by the presence of numerous coconut vendors in different locations within the municipality, so there’s is the need to institute a processing centre to convert coconut waste into selected useable products.
According to the CDO scoping report, establishing a coconut waste aggregation system in the targeted municipality(Madina) is significant because the coconut waste in the municipality is disposed indiscriminately and not managed well.
At official launch of the Coconut Waste Project, the Managing Director of the CDO, Paa Kofi Osei-Owusu said the project is tailored to to achieve a green-circular economy and also create livelihood opportunities for about 200 women and youth through value addition to coconut husks(waste) in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality and Ghana as a whole.
He added that this project will create linkages with market actors to procure value- added products and also implement a monitoring and evaluation system for waste management, learning and scaling of the project.
He added that there would be an average of 50 tons of coconut husks waste aggregation daily within the municipality and also an average of 25 tons of processed coconut husks products produced daily.
On the expected outcomes of the Coconut Waste Project, the Managing Director, Paa Kofi Osei-Owusu stressed that this will improve sanitation conditions particularly related to coconut husks waste and also increase employment to reduce poverty in the Municipality.
He noted that the project will help increase the knowledge and awareness of the Coconut husks value chain in the Municipality and the country.
