Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu has permanently left Newcastle United after 5 years stay with the club.

The former Chelsea winger announced his departure from the club in Twitter post on Tuesday morning.

The post read: “When I arrived in Newcastle almost 5 years ago, I was made to feel welcome from the start..by everyone at the club and especially by the fans. I grew to love the city and my young family feel very at home here,” Atsu wrote on Tuesday.

“Sadly, the time has now come for me to leave the club, so I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who is part of the Newcastle United family.

“Thank you to the Toon Army fans, a lot of whom I’ve met around the city. I will never forget my time in the North East and for sure I will follow the results every week. Thank you my Geordie staff, players & fans, it’s been a pleasure!”

Christian Atsu first joined Newcastle on loan from Chelsea in 2016. The deal was made permanent in July 2017.

Atsu in his 5 years stay with the Magpies made 107 appearances and scored 8 goals. He was an integral member of the team until the arrival of Steve Bruce in 2019.

The 29-year old since then started just 5 league games and was left out of the club’s 25-man squad for the first round of the 2020/21 English Premier League season.

Atsu was handed a lifeline in January, he was named in the 25-man squad for the second round but never made an appearance.

Christian Atsu, who announced his retirement from the Ghana national team earlier last year is currently linked with a move to English Championship fold Huddersfield.
