MEMBERS of the Diplomatic Corps yesterday joined hundreds of Ghanaians nationwide to observe the Green Ghana Day - an initiative aimed at planting five million trees across the country.

At an event organized by the Forestry Commission at the Seismic Observatory in Accra, diplomats, numbering over thirty came together to plant trees to mark the day.

Prior to planting the trees, the diplomats took turns to introduce themselves by way of mentioning their names and the countries they represented.

Led by the Chief Executive of the Commission, John Allotey, the diplomats were each given seedlings with unique codes, which they planted at specific points at the Seismic Observatory.

Following the planting of the trees, the dignitaries joined Mr. Allotey in unveiling a plaque close to the entrance of the Observatory to commemorate the occasion.

In his remarks the Forestry Commission Chief Executive described the initiative as a “positive intervention” aimed at improving the country’s natural landscape; mobilizing and sensitizing Ghanaians on the importance of tree planting; and inculcating into the youth and the general public the need to protect the natural environment.

He disclosed that most of the seedlings were sourced locally – from the various local districts – which is an avenue for job creation.

“We set ourselves to develop these seedlings and find land banks to be able to plant them, and then started mobilizing Ghanaians to create that consciousness in them.

“I am happy to report that we have received massive support from various stakeholders including individuals and organizations from political, religious, traditional and social backgrounds”, the Forestry Commission boss reported.

Speaking on behalf of the diplomats, the Dean of the diplomatic corps and Colombian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Claudia Turboy Quintero expressed solidarity with President Nana Akufo-Addo and the people of Ghana on their ambition to make Ghana green.

She went on to pledge the support of the corps towards the full realization of the objectives of the initiative.

“We dream together with you. We dream together with you for a green Ghana, and Africa as a whole. We are together in this with you”, she assured.

Personnel from media and other organizations who joined in the program also participated in the tree planting exercise.
