Ghana seal play off spot with hard-fought win over South Africa
Captain Andre Ayew marked his 100th cap for the Black Stars with a goal that booked Ghana’s place in the Play-Offs of the World Cup qualifiers.
Ayew stepped up to score from 12-yards to give Ghana the much needed win in a tensed game at the Cape Coast Stadium.
The Black Stars needed to beat South Africa to progress to the Play-Offs while their counterparts needed to avoid defeat to keep their dream of making it to the World Cup since they last hosted it in 2010.
The visiting side for a large part of the first half managed to keep Ghana at bay as Jordan Ayew and Kyereh came close to scoring for Ghana.
The home-side eventually strolled into the lead from the spot following a foul on Daniel Amartey.
Ayew Cooly slotted home to prompt celebrations among the crowd and the playing body.
The Bafana Bafana threw bodies forward to snatch a late equalizer but the Ghanaian defense stood firm to repel the attack and earn a precious play off spot.
The Black Stars will now wait to find out their opponents for the final phase of qualification scheduled for March next year
