Feature: The Discourteous Detour

I have come to have my haircut in peace. Though I was wandering how I could engage my barber who, had resorted to charging me ten cedi instead of the sevenbj cedi he had charged me the first time I visited his shop.
I know it’s because of the IPhone which had informed that his beyond the pale decision of charging more. That said, I would always go there because it is a new shop, with a fully installed air-condition (AC) and, it’s a stone thrown away from where I reside, so it is worth it.
There was an old woman who had gotten inside before I had reached the shop. But then the barber hadn’t switched the AC on. I didn’t want to suffocate under the standing fan thus I decided to take a sit on the balcony. I would not be there alone; there was this neatly dressed young man; fair in complexion, and has stunningly trimmed his long beard.
This old woman and her barber friend were busily having a convo while her barbering was ongoing. Later, I would know that she was advising him to relate well with his fiancée. That’s all I can infer.
While I was outside, this young man and I hadn’t traded a word yet. I was surfing my phone, he was doing same, as usual. I didn’t know what broke the silence though.
And I could hear him say, “the weather of 31st December had always been different. It tells us that God is about doing wonderful things for us.” I realized that he was directing those words to me so I nodded in consonance. Earlier I thought he was just pondering over the wonders of God.
We should have left it there but this man who, didn’t appear like a preacher nor a motivational speaker proceeded. “Bro, I say, if you failed your exam last year, or you didn’t get that job, this new year you would get it. Believe me!” These words came soothingly into my ears.
When I realized that the barber had turned on the Air-condition. I didn’t mind him nor give a shrug! I left into the barbering shop. After I was done having my haircut and passing by him, I noticed how he looked at me with those exasperating eyes. Maybe he was saying ‘I don’t have manners’!
But hey, how dare him made a reference to the future or tomorrow without saying: “If God permits”? Or nowadays tomorrow belongs to mankind? I don’t want to be conned this way. A lot have been happening lately, and for matters of faith, we need not to joke with it.
Forgive me for being choleric towards the young man. I think I was just mean and moody. I would blame it on the jollof rice I didn’t get to eat this afternoon.
However, we need to honor the right of God. Tomorrow is His, ours is nothing! If you want to speak in the future, do ask for permission by simply saying: If God Permits!
