Daniel Amartey and Djiku impress, Thomas Partey lethargic: Ghana player ratings and assessment vs Gabon
The Black Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Gabon in the second Group C game of the 2021 TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana opened the scoring in the 19th minute from a brilliant individual effort from skipper Andre Ayew. Substitute Jim Allevinah scored the equalizer in the 89th minute.
Here’s how MahamaShaibu.com rated and assessed the players.
1. Jojo Wollacott – 6.0/10
The Swindon goalkeeper didn’t have much to do and showed improvement in his passing. Jojo completed 50% of his passes, as compared to 13% in the first game against Morocco. Hard to fault him for the goal Ghana conceded.
2. Andy Yiadom – 6.0/10
Yiadom displayed a satisfactory performance in defense but could have closed down Jim Allevinah for the goal Ghana conceded. The Reading left back showed improvement in his attacking game.
3. Baba Rahman – 6.0/10
Baba Rahman performed tremendously in defensive but offered little to the team in attack.
4. Alexander Djiku- 7.5/10
Alexander Djiku is a gem. The Strasbourg center/back was solid in the heart of defense as he was on alert to deal with any dangerous ball from the opposition.
5. Daniel Amartey – 7.5/10
Just like his defensive partner, Daniel Amartey was solid in defense. The Leicester center-back was willing to put his life on the line to stop any dangerous attack. He completed 91% of his passes and was dispossessed only 4 times.
6. Baba Iddrisu – 6.5/10
Easily Ghana’s best player on the field before he was subbed off in the 65th minute due to an injury. Baba’s sub affected Ghana as they failed to control the game in the middle in the remaining minutes of the game.
7. Thomas Party – 5.0/10
Despite assisting Ghana’s goal, Thomas Partey was a shadow of himself in most parts of the game, just like he was against Morocco in the opening game.
8. Daniel Kofi Kyereh – 5.5/10
Daniel Kofi Kyere worked tirelessly throughout the game. However, he failed to provide any threat in attack.
9. Jordan Ayew – 5.0/10
Jordan Ayew’s goal scoring drought for the Black Stars continued. However, it is hard to fault him for not ending the drought against Gabon. He had limited service from the midfield.
10. Andre Ayew – 7.0/10
Scored Ghana’s goal and could have at least had an assist to his name if he was a bit decisive and selfless. The Black Stars skipper was named man of the match.
11. Kamaldeen Sulemana – 5.0/10
Another bad game for Kamaldeen Sulemana, the youngster who’s held highly across Europe was kept quiet through the game and was unsurprisingly subbed off in the 61st minute. Kamal made only dribble attempt and failed to complete it.
Substitutes:
1. Edmund Addo – 5.5/10
Came on for Kamaldeen Sulemana in the 61st minute and brought stability to the midfield.
2. Joseph Painstil – 5.0/10
Came on for Baba Iddrisu in the 65th minute and had a good opportunity to make it 2-0 for Ghana. However, he wasn’t decisive enough and didn’t even threaten the opposition with that chance.
3. Benjamin Tetteh – N/A
Came on in the final minutes of the game and didn’t have time to make an impact. Tetteh was shown a red card after the game for violent conduct.
4. Abdul Fatawu Issahaku – N/A
Came on in the last minutes of the game for Jordan Ayew and didn’t have time make an impact.
