JUST IN: Benjamin Tetteh slapped with a ban
Ghanaian striker Benjamin Tetteh has been issued a 3-match ban by the Disciplinary Committee (DC) of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the melee that transpired after Ghana’s 1-1 draw against Gabon on Friday night.
Ghana were left stunned as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Gabon in the second group game of the 2021 TotalEnergies African Cup of Nation (AFCON). Andre Ayew opened the scoring for Ghana in the 19th minute before substitute Jim Allevinah scored the equalizer in the 89th minute.
The aftermath of the game saw a melee between the two sides and Benjamin Tetteh who came back on in the final minutes of the game was shown a red card for punching Gabon’s Aaron Boupendza.
The CAF Disciplinary Board held a meeting this morning to deliberate over the incident. The board after deliberation decided to ban Tetteh for 3 games, a statement on CAF’s website revealed.
The statement read: On 13 January 2022, Gabon played Ghana at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde, Cameroon. The match officials indicated in their report that at the final whistle, Ghana player Benjamin Tetteh allegedly assaulted a Gabonese player.
CAF Disciplinary Board decided to:
• To suspend player Ghana player Benjamin Tetteh for one additional game match in addition to his automatic suspension of two matches. Consequently, the player has been suspended for three matches.
• The Disciplinary Board has also issued a stern warning to both teams for their unsportsmanship behaviour after referees’ full time whistle.
This means that Benjamin Tetteh will miss Ghana’s final Group C game against Comoros at the Roumde Adjia stadium on Tuesday. He will also miss the Round of 16 and Quarterfinals games should Ghana qualify from their group.
The 1-1 draw against Gabon puts Ghana’s chances of reaching the AFCON knockout stages in serious doubt, with the Black Stars needing to beat Comoros on Tuesday to stand any chance of progressing.
