Review Beggars and Destitute Act and Enforce - CMYPD

Mr. Umar Adamu, Executive Director of CMYPD

Street begging has become lucrative in Ghana among certain group of people and a serious nuisance in the Greater Accra Region.

This nuisance in the country involve children as well.

The Executive Director of Center for Muslim Youth in Peace and Development (CMYPD), Mr. Umar Adamu,  was appalled by the activities and has appealed to the city authorities to clear the streets of these beggers.

According to him, most of these beggers came into the country under the pretext of trade and ended up in the street begging.

He alleged that some agents who are involved in human trafficking are behind these migrants coming into the country from other African countries.

Mr. Adamu revealed that countries where most of them migrate from include Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Mali and Burkina Faso.

The CMYPD boss made the call during an interview with thealhajj.com in Accra on Monday.

He called on various governmental bodies such as CHRAJ, Local Government, Parliament of Ghana and other stakeholders to review and enforce the Beggars and Destitute Act to help combat this menace.

He, again in another statement, expressed disappointment at the office of the National Chief Imam for not coming out to condemn such obnoxious act since it is totally against the teachings and practices of the Islamic Religion.

The Executive Director for CMYPD explained that these beggers drag the name of Islam into disrepute and tarnish its image.

He called on the Muslim youth to rise up against such act to save the image of the religion.

“This is a disgraceful act and the Islamic religion is totally against it, the youth who are majority must rise up against the beggers to save the image of the religion”, he stated.

He also added that “the traffickers have taken freedom in Ghana for granted by invading the streets and harassing people to take money”.
