NPP super delegates congress, who is voting?
The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will on Saturday, August 26, 2023, go to the polls to select five out of the ten presidential aspirants to be presented for the National Delegates Congress scheduled for November 4, 2023, to elect a presidential candidate for the 2024
The super delegate’s congress has become a necessity due to the party’s August 22, 2009 constitution amendment which states that if more than five aspirants qualify to contest, a special electoral college will be convened to choose the final five candidates. Currently, 10 aspirants have filed to contest, and the party has cleared all to contest
The 10 aspirants in the race include Ken Ohene Agyapong, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Joe Ghartey, Kwadwo Poku, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Francis Addai Nimoh, Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Article 12 clause 5(b) of the NPP’s constitution
stipulates who qualifies to vote in the super delegate’s congress.
This year, a total of 961 delegates are expected to
cast their votes in 17 voting centres, comprising a centre in each of the 16
regional capitals and one at the party’s headquarters in Accra.
The current electoral college includes All Constituency
Chairmen – 275, All Regional
Executives – 272, All NPP Members of Parliament – 137, Regional Representatives
to the National Council – 60, Council of Elders – 30, Founding Members /
Fathers – 123, Reps from the Women’s Wing – 3, Rep from the Youth Wing – 3, Reps
from the Nasara Wing – 3, Three (3) reps from each of the 25 international
branches – 75, All National Officers, All
Former National Officers, The President and Former Presidents.
Recent research by the Centre for Sustainable African
Development Initiatives, UK, has predicted that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu
Bawumia will win overwhelmingly in the NPP Super Delegates elections with
former trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen and Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyepong
will place second and third respectively.
Former General Sectary of the Party, Kwabena Adjei
Agyepong and former Agric Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto are projected to
complete the top 5.
