Last weekend, the Chargers won their first game of 2023 without Austin Ekeler's assistance. Sunday might be the day they have to repeat it.
According to the team's official injury report, Ekeler (ankle) is questionable for Los Angeles' Week 4 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Injuries are a major issue for Los Angeles going into Sunday. Outside linebacker Joey Bosa (hamstring/toe) is questionable, while safety Derwin James (hamstring) is doubtful to play. Due to a non-emergent, heart-related medical concern, the team is also anticipated to place center Corey Linsley, who has been ruled out, on injured reserve on Saturday, according to NFL Network's Bridget Condon.
Ekeler was limited in each of the week's practices as he works to recover from an injury that kept him out of action for two weeks. The Chargers have tried to rely on Joshua Kelley in his absence, but they have mostly abandoned a fruitless rushing strategy in favor of the throw.
Last Saturday, Justin Herbert guided the Chargers to a dramatic comeback victory over the Vikings in Minneapolis. Without Ekeler there to help the Chargers' offensive attack balance, Herbert was able to propel Los Angeles to victory.
More of a long-term effect will probably result from Linsley's absence. The center played in all three of the games up until Week 4 in 2022, when he played in all 16 games in 2021.
Will Clapp, a six-year pro who played in the Pro Bowl in 2021 and was named All-Pro in 2020, is anticipated to succeed Linsley, The NFL wrote.
