Martin Odegaard nearly signed for Tottenham as a teenager before Zinedine Zidane called, The Mirror reported. While Odegaard was playing for Stromsgodset in Norway, Spurs attempted to sign him by sending their technical director Franco Baldini to Norway for negotiations. But as we now know, the individual who recently extended his contract with Arsenal would choose a different course.
Ghlense.net quotes The Mirror: “Baldini was desperate to get Odegaard and returned to London hoping to strike a deal - and then Real Madrid made their move. Real Madrid legend Zidane, who coached the club’s B team before becoming manager, called Odegaard directly to tempt him to move to the Bernabeu.
“Odegaard has now committed himself to Arsenal for the long term and will captain them in Sunday’s North London derby - but he could easily have ended up playing for the other side. Odegaard signed for Real Madrid when he was just 16 - for just £3m with the fee rising to £6m - ahead of all of Europe’s top clubs with Tottenham one of the teams who missed out".
