Mikel Arteta confesses to considering a different goalkeeper during match

After benching Aaron Ramsdale on Sunday, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he "regrets" not believing his instincts to switch goalkeepers during games in the past.

Ramsdale's streak of starting each and every Premier League game since March 2022 came to an abrupt end when David Raya took his position in goal for Arsenal's 1-0 victory over Everton on Super Sunday, Sky Sports reported.

Arteta stated that he approached the goalkeeping position as any other when he first decided to bench Ramsdale. He even admitted that he had previously thought about switching keepers midway through a game.

"I haven't had a single question about why Gabriel hasn't been starting," he remarked, explaining why Gabby Jesus and Fabio Vieira played. More trophies have been won by him than by anyone else in that locker room, including me.

I want Aaron to respond just like Gabriel Jesus did. the same as Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kai Havertz. The same exact thing. Instead of 10 plus 1, we play with 11 players.

I've only been a manager for three and a half years, making me a very young manager. One of my regrets is that I felt the need to switch the goalie in the middle of two games in this era after 60 and 85 minutes, respectively.

I didn't do it because I lacked the courage to. To maintain a lead, though, I can substitute a center back for a winger or striker and play a back five. We had those games drawn, and I was extremely disappointed.

"Someone is going to do it, and maybe [people will say] that's strange. But why not? Tell me why not. You have all the qualities in another goalkeeper to do something, you want to change the momentum, do it.

"It's a regret that I have. Now my feeling is to get everybody engaged, that they have to play regardless of the competition. That's my message.

"We adapt to our qualities that our players have, and try to play to their strengths. There are games to do certain things, games to do other things. In my opinion it was really important against Everton, and it was really important to benefit the team."
