Spurs triumph 2-1 over Liverpool after Jones and Jota were sent off

As nine-man, both Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota displayed red. Liverpool's painstaking, last-second 2-1 loss against Tottenham put a stop to their undefeated start to the Premier League season.

The Merseysiders had hoped to benefit from Manchester City's unexpected setback at Wolves earlier on Saturday, but Ange Postecoglou's team moved into second place, one point behind Pep Guardiola's champions, thanks to Joel Matip's own goal in the 96th minute.

In the opening exchanges, the visitors were more dangerous, as Vicario made two sensational saves to deny Cody Gakpo and Andy Robertson.

However, following a VAR intervention, the referee increased Curtis Jones' caution for a lunge on Yves Bissouma to a straight red on minute 26. This transformed the game's dynamic.

Ten minutes later, Son Heung-Min scored after superb buildup from James Maddison and Richarlison, giving Spurs the edge.

Despite being down a man, Liverpool continued to pose a threat when they broke, and Gakpo leveled the score in the last seconds of the opening half.

After the break, Alisson saved the visitors' bacon with excellent stops to deny Maddison and Son, but the Merseysiders' chances of coming out unscathed were further dashed when replacement Jota was given a second yellow card 21 minutes from time, Eurosport wrote.

For the remainder of the game, Tottenham occupied the Liverpool half, and in stoppage time, Matip headed a low cross from the right into his own net to give Tottenham a victory.

Spurs go up to second as a result, one point behind Manchester City, the current leaders, and above Arsenal on goal differential. Liverpool suffers their first top-flight loss of the season, dropping to fourth place and moving a point further back.
