AfOx Catalyst Grants offer seed funding to facilitate collaborative research endeavors involving researchers affiliated with African research institutions and the University of Oxford.

These grants are open to all academic disciplines. Over the past five years, we have bestowed more than 200 Catalyst Grants, fostering new collaborations among researchers from over 100 African institutions and over 50 Oxford Departments.

AfOx Catalyst Grants have played a pivotal role in establishing enduring partnerships between African and Oxford-based researchers.

These collaborations have yielded significant research outcomes, influenced policy decisions, and attracted substantial additional funding.

There are two pathways for applying for a Catalyst Grant: AfOx Travel Grants and AfOx Starter Grants.

AfOx Travel Grants

AfOx Travel Grants support the initiation of new collaborations through travel by applicants, either from an African institution to Oxford or vice versa.

These grants facilitate researchers meeting at an African institution or in Oxford to collaborate on mutually interesting topics.

Activities funded by AfOx Travel Grants include, but are not limited to, workshops and conferences, co-supervision, curriculum co-development, joint lectures and seminars, co-authoring publications, joint grant applications, and primary research endeavors.

The duration of a travel grant can range from 1 to 8 weeks, with grants available for a maximum of £5000.

Travel grant applications must be submitted jointly by academics or researchers based in Africa (at either academic or non-academic institutions) and academics or researchers at the University of Oxford.

AfOx Starter Grants

AfOx Starter Grants support activities such as early-phase idea development, feasibility studies, public engagement, and primary research projects.

These grants offer seed funding for endeavors aiming to establish sustainable partnerships and bolster applications for longer-term fellowships and funding opportunities.

AfOx Starter Grants can span up to 12 weeks and can be applied for up to a maximum of £5,000.

Similar to travel grants, starter grant applications must be submitted jointly by academics or researchers based in Africa (at either academic or non-academic institutions) and academics or researchers at the University of Oxford.

AfOx urges all applicants for the Starter Grants scheme to carefully evaluate the necessity for travel before submitting an application.

About Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx)

Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx) operates as a cross-university platform within the University of Oxford. Its mission is to facilitate equitable and sustainable collaborations between University of Oxford researchers and African universities.

AfOx also aims to increase the number of African students pursuing postgraduate degrees at Oxford. Since its establishment in 2016, AfOx has fostered over 250 new collaborations involving 70 departments at the University of Oxford and 120 African institutions across 32 countries, building a network of over 3000 members.

Benefits of AfOx Grants

The Travel Grant can cover travel expenses (in either direction, i.e., from the University of Oxford, UK to an institution in Africa or vice versa), accommodation costs, and incidental expenses, up to a maximum of £5000.

The Starter Grant can be used to cover expenses related to developing new collaborations, including costs associated with defined research projects, feasibility studies, or public engagement activities, up to a maximum of £5000.

Applicants must clearly address at least one Sustainable Development Goal and demonstrate how the proposed activities will benefit the chosen area of study, generating societal benefits beyond knowledge and understanding in the focus area.

Requirements for AfOx Grants Qualification

Catalyst Grants support the establishment of sustainable and equitable partnerships between researchers in Africa and the University of Oxford.

Applications should articulate the value of the proposed activities to both collaborating parties.

If applicable, please specify how your project addresses a specific challenge related to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Awards for both Catalyst Grants are capped at a maximum of £5,000 and must be jointly submitted by researchers based in Africa (at either academic or non-academic institutions) and researchers at the University of Oxford.

The Catalyst Grant may cover more than two individuals, and additional team members should be named under the 'Purpose of the Grant'.

The primary aim of the scheme is to foster the development of new collaborations and is not intended to serve as alternative support for established partnerships.

Applications from doctoral students must be accompanied by a letter from the supervisor or department head, indicating how the proposed activities will contribute to the establishment of sustainable, long-term partnerships between researchers in Africa and the University of Oxford.
