This fellowship, offering up to $2,000, supports international African students in traveling to Africa for research. 

It pays tribute to former Nigerian President Nnamdi Azikiwe, who collaborated with MSU to establish a renowned land-grant university in Eastern Nigeria. 

This initiative marked the inception of MSU's African Studies faculty, boasting around 100 scholars across various colleges and departments.

Michigan State University (Michigan State, MSU) is a public land-grant research university in East Lansing, Michigan, founded in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. 

It became the first land-grant institution in the United States in 1863, following the Morrill Act of 1862. The college adopted coeducation in 1870.

- These funds are intended to offset costs; students are encouraged to seek additional funding if their expenses exceed the awarded amount.

Requirements for MSU Nnamdi Azikiwe International African Student Fellowship

The African Studies Center acknowledges the limited grant opportunities for international African students at MSU, usually restricted to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

Therefore:

- Eligibility extends to African undergraduate or graduate students conducting research in Africa.

- Applicants must be actively enrolled in an MSU degree-granting program, with an obligation to return to MSU as registered students in the semester following the award.

- Priority is given to students in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need.

- Completion of any MSU requirements related to conducting research abroad, such as IRB training, is mandatory.

- Fellowship recipients must submit a report (3 to 5 pages) to the African Studies Center within one month of returning from Africa.

The African Studies Center administers the fellowship program, and winners are selected by an African Studies Award Selection Committee appointed by the Center Director.
