The Imperial College President's PhD Scholarships offer comprehensive support for each of the 50 recipients throughout their 3.5 years of study, including:
- Full coverage of tuition fees.
- A stipend of £25,150 (2024-25 rate) per annum to assist with living expenses.

Additional Admissions Instructions
For the 2024–25 academic year, the earliest start date for funded places is 1 August 2024, while the latest start date is 1 November 2024. When completing the application, you must include a 2-page document when prompted:
- The first page should be a personal statement detailing your motivations for applying to Imperial and the scholarship, along with any additional information not covered elsewhere on the form that you believe will strengthen your application.
- The second page should contain your research proposal. You may submit updated versions of this statement if necessary after submitting your application, should your department shortlist you for the scholarship. Writing in the first person is encouraged.
When asked for the names of two academic referees, ensure that these individuals can provide an academic reference supporting your application (e.g., your personal tutor or thesis supervisor).
Your proposed PhD supervisor should not be included. You are encouraged to share these guidelines with your referees, with particular emphasis on the recommendation to use 'they/them' language (rather than gender pronouns).

Requirements for Imperial College President's PhD Scholarships Qualification
- Applications are welcome from talented candidates worldwide, including those from Imperial College London and the UK. There are no nationality restrictions.
- Candidates should rank among the highest achievers within their undergraduate cohort and either possess or be on track to receive a first-class UK degree or its equivalent.
- For candidates with a standalone Master’s qualification, a distinction is required, or evidence of high performance leading to a distinction should be provided if it has not been achieved yet.
Additionally, candidates must hold a first-class UK undergraduate degree or its equivalent. (Integrated Masters forming part of an undergraduate degree, e.g., MEng, MSci, M.Math, are evaluated as undergraduate qualifications by Admissions when determining eligibility.)
Candidates with multiple standalone Master’s qualifications must have achieved a distinction in the one most relevant to their PhD study.
- Candidates with degrees from foreign institutions are strongly encouraged to verify if their scores/grades align with the relevant eligibility criteria.
- Prior to applying, candidates must establish contact with a supervisor in an academic department at Imperial College London who has agreed to oversee their research project. Please note that supervisors may only oversee one scholar at a time.

Selection Process and Interview Information
Applications will undergo a two-stage assessment:
- The Department to which candidates have applied will review those who meet or are predicted to meet the eligibility requirements.
Departments will select a shortlist of the most exceptional candidates to present to the Imperial College Selection Panel for consideration.
- The final decision will be made by the Imperial College Selection Panel, composed of the Vice-Provost (Research) and the Faculty Vice-Deans for Research.
The Panel will evaluate shortlisted candidates from all Faculties and grant scholarships to those who demonstrate the greatest potential.
Successful candidates will receive written confirmation of their scholarship.
Any offer of a PhD place will be conditional on a final interview by the Department and, if applicable, on the candidate obtaining the predicted qualifications.
Applicants not selected for the scholarship will automatically be considered for the PhD.
Assessment Criteria for Imperial College President’s PhD Scholarships 2024-2025
Candidates will be evaluated by the Faculties and College Selection Panel based on the following criteria:

- Research potential, as demonstrated by:
- The candidate’s research experience to date
- Their interest in discovery
- The research plan and its potential contribution as described in their research proposal
