Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) 2024 Program For African Students
The Yale Young African Scholars Program (YYAS) is a rigorous academic and leadership initiative tailored for African secondary school students who possess the talent, ambition, energy, and innovative ideas needed to make a meaningful impact as emerging leaders, even before embarking on their university education.
Now in its ninth year, this intensive program brings together African secondary school students aged 14–18 for an immersive academic and residential experience, all of which is provided at no cost.
Administered by the Yale Young Global Scholars Program and building upon its successful interdisciplinary academic framework, YYAS participants will attend lectures led by distinguished Yale faculty, participate in seminars led by Yale student instructors, and engage in experiential exercises designed to enhance their leadership capabilities.
Through robust intellectual discussions, they will gain insights into Africa's most critical challenges and opportunities.
YYAS also offers students free standardized test preparation sessions, in addition to guidance on the university application process and leadership training.
Participants will sharpen their academic competencies, receive valuable advice on university admissions and career pathways, and become part of a dynamic network of young leaders spanning the African continent.
Upon completing the program, students will be paired with mentors who will support them throughout the university application process. Importantly, there is no tuition fee for students to participate in YYAS, making it an accessible and enriching opportunity for young African scholars.

Benefits of Yale Young African Scholars
The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) program aims to be accessible to students from all financial backgrounds. Therefore, there is no participation cost for students.
Duration of Program
- YYAS College Prep Workshop (online; 5 days): July 18-23, 2024
- YYAS Leadership Summit (residential in Zimbabwe; 10 days): August 9-18, 2024
Requirements for Yale Young African Scholars Qualification
To qualify for the YYAS program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Age: Applicants must be between the ages of 14-18 years old as of July 18, 2024. It's important to note that a typical YYAS student falls within the age range of 16-17.
- English Proficiency: Applicants must be proficient in English, as the program involves a rigorous academic curriculum conducted in English.
- Citizenship: Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of an African country. The program also accepts applications from refugees residing in an African country.
- School Location: Applicants must currently attend school in an African country.
- Grade Level: Applicants must be current 11th-grade students or equivalent international grade levels.
- Graduation Date: For students in the Northern Hemisphere, the graduation from secondary school should be no earlier than May/June 2025 and no later than May/June 2026.
For students in the Southern Hemisphere, the graduation should be no earlier than November/December 2024 and no later than November/December 2025.
Students in their final year or term of secondary school, those who have already graduated from secondary school, or university students are not eligible to apply.
- Previous YYAS or YYGS Participation: Alumni of YYAS or YYGS programs are not eligible to apply for YYAS. However, YYAS alumni can apply to YYGS if they meet the eligibility criteria.

- Excellent academic records
- Demonstrated leadership potential
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Collaboration and teamwork abilities
- Resilience and determination in overcoming challenges
- High standards of personal and professional conduct
- Proficiency in reading, analyzing, and reflecting on extensive and challenging English materials
- Interest in engaging in discussions on intellectual, moral, and political issues in Africa
