Amy Newman Reflects on the Business of Gospel Music: My Highest Appreciation from Ministry was GHC 16,000

Amy Newman

In a candid revelation, veteran gospel musician Amy Newman has provided insights into the changing dynamics of the gospel music industry, responding to recent remarks from Rev. Abraham Lamptey advocating for free gospel events.

While acknowledging the noble nature of serving in the ministry of God, Newman shed light on the industry's evolution into a business that supports gospel artists. With a musical career spanning over four decades, she emphasized the transformative shift where gospel artists, once acknowledged with gestures of gratitude or modest amounts, now grapple with logistical and miscellaneous costs associated with organizing concerts.

During a recent discussion, Newman disclosed that her highest financial appreciation as a gospel musician amounted to GHC 16,000. This substantial sum was received from a generous man of God who recognized and valued her longstanding dedication to the ministry.

"Times have changed, and money has become a valuable commodity. The logistics and miscellaneous expenses in staging a concert involve money, and you need to cover all these bills in the end. I have been billed for several gospel events, and I didn't use to charge because I was happy working for the ministry. People appreciated my works based on what they wanted to give. My highest appreciation was recently GHC 16,000 from a man of God who blessed me for the many years of my ministry."

Newman's comments underscore the paradigm shift in the gospel music landscape, where financial considerations have become integral to sustaining the ministry and the creative endeavors of gospel artists. This revelation prompts a broader conversation on how the industry can strike a balance between its spiritual calling and the practicalities of financial sustainability.
