'Mo mma me fans' - KT Hammond: Ghana's Most Comical MP Strikes Again in Parliament
Kobina Tahir Hammond, affectionately known as KT Hammond, Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa and the Minister for Trade and Industry, has once again taken center stage as Ghana's most comical legislator. KT Hammond's theatrical performances in Parliament have become a recurring spectacle, and his recent display during a debate on a legislative instrument (L.I.) further solidified his reputation.
On November 24, 2023, KT Hammond sought to present an L.I. on behalf of the government, aiming to restrict the importation of 22 items into Ghana. However, the minority caucus vehemently opposed the L.I., successfully preventing its presentation in Parliament.
Undeterred by the opposition, KT Hammond asserted the government's constitutional entitlement to present the L.I., urging the Speaker of Parliament to allow its submission. In a typical KT Hammond fashion, he expressed his discontent with the minority's interference in a comical manner.
"Constitutionally, we are entitled to lay this, and we beseech you (the Speaker of Parliament) to allow us to lay this. And it is not within the ambit of those on this side (the minority) to prevent a constitutionally, properly prepared document from being laid in this house," he declared.
However, KT Hammond didn't miss the chance to add a touch of humor to his concluding remarks. In a playful tone, he called on his colleagues from the majority side of the house to applaud him, exclaiming, "Mo mma me fans" (meaning "Hail my fans").
KT Hammond's ability to infuse humor into parliamentary debates has made him a unique figure in Ghana's political landscape, adding an entertaining dimension to the often serious proceedings of the legislative house.
