Scholarship Provisions for Doctoral Programmes

Successful candidates in doctoral programmes can avail themselves of a range of provisions covered by the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship, including:

2. Monthly Stipend: Doctoral level students receive a monthly stipend according to Hungarian legislation. This amounts to HUF 140,000 (approximately EUR 1,365) for the first phase of education (4 semesters) and HUF 180,000 (approximately EUR 470) for the second phase (4 semesters), supporting living expenses for 12 months a year until the completion of studies.
3. Accommodation Contribution: Scholars can opt for a free dormitory place (subject to institutional capacity) or receive a monthly contribution of HUF 40,000 towards accommodation costs for the entire scholarship period. It's noteworthy that if a student chooses not to reside in the dormitory, the HUF 40,000/month contributes to rental costs, with some considerations for city-specific living expenses.
4. Medical Insurance: Health is a priority, and the scholarship includes health care services in line with Hungarian legislation. Additionally, scholars receive supplementary medical insurance of up to HUF 65,000 (approximately EUR 170) per year per person.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme, applicants must meet specific criteria:

1. Nomination by the responsible authorities of the Sending Partner.
2. Verification of a valid cooperation agreement between Hungary and the sending country.

Supervisor Requirement:

Some doctoral schools may require applicants to have a supervisor at the Host Institution. This supervisor, in the event of a successful application, undertakes the responsibility of guiding the student's doctoral education and research activities within the chosen doctoral programme. If required, a statement of acceptance from the supervisor must be attached to the application.

For the 2023/2024 academic year, 21 Hungarian higher education institutions are actively participating in the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme for doctoral studies. Over 200 study programmes are offered, primarily in English, with additional programs available in Hungarian for those proficient in the language.
