Historical Battle: A Possible Root of Dormaahene's Boldness Against Asantehene

Amidst the recent publicized tension between the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a historical account emerges, shedding light on a possible reason for the Dormaahene's boldness in challenging the Ashanti kingdom.

A user on the X app, Nana Poku (@theNanaPoku), shared a tweet hinting at a historical battle fought at Suntreso, Kumasi, where a mistake led to the defeat of the Ashanti king, Nana Obiri Yeboa, at the hands of the Chief of Dormaa.

The narration explained that during the battle, Nana Obiri charged Nana Ntiamoah and another ally to watch the road leading to a village called Abanpera Daase, where the chief of Dormaa resided. Unfortunately, Nana Ntiamoah failed to keep watch on the road, allowing the Chief of Dormaa to attack Nana Obiri by surprise on a Sunday morning.

The encounter resulted in an exchange of shields between Nana Obiri and the Chief of Dormaa, leading to Nana Obiri's defeat and death in battle. The head of the Ashanti king was taken by the Dormaa leader, and it is said to be preserved and used during traditional events, symbolizing Dormaa's triumph over Kumasi.

The historical account reveals that Nana Obiri Yeboa was the Kumasehene during his era, reigning from 1660 to 1680. His defeat marked a significant historical event, potentially contributing to the Dormaahene's audacity in challenging the Asantehene in contemporary times.

While historical events should be approached with nuance and context, this account provides an intriguing perspective on the dynamics between the Dormaahene and the Asantehene, suggesting that historical conflicts may influence present-day interactions among traditional rulers.
