Steve Hanke Accuses Akufo-Addo of Suppressing Democratic Rights

In his latest critique, economist and Johns Hopkins University Professor Steve Hanke targeted Ghana's President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accusing him of suppressing the rights of Ghanaians to protest against his government. The scathing remarks were shared on X on Sunday, November 26, 2023.

Hanke's post, accompanied by a graphic poster depicting a giant Akufo-Addo trampling on protesting Ghanaians, asserted that the President's actions reflect a disdain for democratic principles. The economist claimed that by stifling dissent and demonstrations, President Akufo-Addo is sending a clear message about his stance on democracy.

This isn't the first time Professor Steve Hanke has publicly criticized the Ghanaian President. Known for his outspoken views, Hanke has consistently voiced concerns about President Akufo-Addo's governance on social media platforms. The academic's previous criticisms have ranged from economic management to what he perceives as the President's lack of proficiency in handling Ghana's economy.

In the past, Hanke labeled Akufo-Addo as a "masterclass of economic incompetence" and accused him of leading Ghana down a path of economic stagnation with his alleged "stupidity." The repeated rebukes from Hanke underscore the ongoing scrutiny President Akufo-Addo faces, particularly in the realm of economic policies and, more recently, perceived limitations on democratic freedoms.

As these criticisms continue to gain traction in the public discourse, the dynamics between Ghana's government and its critics, both domestic and international, remain a focal point of discussion and debate.
