Unlocking Global Legal Horizons: The ICJ Judicial Fellowship Programme 2024

In the pursuit of a career in international law, the ICJ Judicial Fellowship Programme emerges as a gateway for recent law graduates to gain unparalleled professional experience.

Formerly known as the University Traineeship Programme, this initiative, established in 1999, beckons legal enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the workings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The primary aim is to enhance participants' understanding of public international law in practice and familiarize them with the intricacies of the Court's procedures.

About the International Court of Justice

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), often referred to as the World Court, stands as one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN).

Functioning as a cornerstone of international law, the ICJ settles disputes between states and provides advisory opinions on global legal matters.

Its rulings and opinions serve as primary sources of international law, making it the sole international court adjudicating general disputes between countries.

Aim and Benefits of the ICJ Judicial Fellowship Programme

The ICJ Judicial Fellowship Programme is a prestigious opportunity for legal scholars worldwide. Each nominating university must commit to funding the stipend, health insurance, and travel costs of its selected candidate if chosen.

While the Court does not specify the stipend amount, it should ensure a minimum standard of accommodation and subsistence in The Hague, facilitating a transformative experience for the fellow without financial strain.

It is important to note that this fellowship is not a self-funded internship, and candidates lacking financial support from their nominating university will not be eligible. The Court, however, supports with visa facilitation and provides working facilities.

To ensure a diverse pool of candidates, the Court actively seeks participants of varied nationalities. Eligible candidates should be 31 years old or younger at the fellowship's commencement, with exceptions made in special circumstances.

Additionally, candidates must exhibit outstanding academic achievements in their legal studies, showcasing a keen interest in public international law through publications or work experience.

Language proficiency is a key criterion, with candidates required to demonstrate excellent command, both written and oral, in at least one of the two official languages of the Court (English and French).

A working knowledge of the other language is considered advantageous. Only universities can nominate candidates, and the Court encourages institutions to propose more than one nominee.
