Residents of Zongo communities in Ghana have in recent times intensified their hate against the practice of same-sex relationships and many of the residents have been calling for attacks on gays and lesbians in the Zongos.

The Muslims, who predominantly populate the Zongos, perceive same-sex relationships as evil, since such relationships are abhorred by the teachings of the Holy Quran.

Administering severe punishment to gays and lesbians is considered as a holy endeavor every Muslim should not shy away from undertaking.

One cleric,  Sheikh Abu Hamdan , said “Allah gets annoyed when males engage in sexual encounter and such disgusting encounter causes earthquake”.

Shaibu Mohammed  declared wanted

According to him the destruction of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by Allah was as the result of homosexuality and he called for a holy war against gays and lesbians in the country, particularly in Muslim dominated suburbs.

“Should we allow such a shame to continue in our communities against our holy teachings?” he asked. He answered that “certainly no,and we are very happy to chase away such people from our Zongo communities”.

Such incitement by the voices in Zongo communities led to the attack of Hajia Amina Mohammed, the mother  of Shaibu Mohammed , during  a wedding ceremony at Akurem .The boys  pelted  stones at her with blood oozing from her head . It took an intervention of a good Samaritan to whisked her from the scene.  One of the mobs said   ” you are here to observe the beauty of marriage between a man and woman so why are you harboring the sexual practices of your  gay  son and his male  partner   Abdulaziz Adamu   at your  late husband’s house”.

He stressed that “We shall kill him because your late husband was a devoted Muslim, and any time you  shield your evil son and  Abdulaziz   in my late uncle’s home ,Allah raises him alive from the grave to  watch the satanic deeds you oversee and promote at my uncle’s house you inherited”.  They warned to continuously trace the whereabouts of Shaibu to kill him as well as his partner. Upon Shaibu’s escape in  2022, The group have  stormed the Akurem suburb , including urging the youth to alert them should they see Shaibu and his gay friends.

Many gays in Zongo communities notable Adamu Muftawu, Abdul Mujeeb Hakeem, Ramdan Abdulai, Frederick Acquah Aguuta , Habib Karim and others , who were afraid to disclose their sexual preferences for fear of attacks, have since left their known places of abodes with their current whereabouts unknown.

Youth of such Muslim communities are known to have inaugurated special task force to fight what they commonly describe as the importation of the “whiteman’s culture”.
