Covenant Presbyterian School, Dzorwulu, celebrates 17th graduation ceremony with emphasis on academic excellence

The Covenant Presbyterian School-Dzorwulu held its 17th graduation and awards ceremony on Friday, August 2, 2024, marking a momentous occasion for students, parents, and dignitaries present.

Theme: “Maintaining Academic Excellence in the Midst of Challenges: The Role of Stakeholders,” the event highlighted the resilience and achievements of the students while acknowledging the collective efforts of the entire school community.

In her welcome address, Headmistress Evelyn Amoamah Antwi expressed her delight at the gathering, stating, "I warmly welcome each and every one of you as we come together to mark yet another significant milestone in the lives of our students."

She announced that forty-four kindergarten students were graduating and transitioning to Primary One, alongside twenty-four Junior High School (JHS) graduates who successfully completed their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in July 2024

Mrs. Antwi highlighted the theme's importance, citing the challenges educators face, including academic, economic, social, and technological factors.

Despite these challenges, she proudly shared the school’s accomplishments, noting, “By the grace of God Almighty, Covenant Presbyterian School continues to achieve excellence in academic work at all levels, including the BECE, despite the challenges.

Last year, the school achieved a 100% pass rate and an impressive 84% distinction.”

Notable achievements included participation in the Ayawaso West Sub Metro Hepatitis B quiz competition, organised by Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research where the school ranked first.

She also recognised the efforts of Master Frederick Nii Adom Lokko Jnr, who was named among the top ten finalists in the Literacy Challenge 2024 Essay Competition organized by Channel One TV and City FM; and the prestigious Overall Best Student award for JHS 3 presented to Frederick Lokko Nii Adom Jnr.

The ceremony also honored deserving staff members for their dedication and commitment to excellence in various categories.

The preschool category award went to Ms. Christiana Adu Gyamfi, the Lower Primary award was given to Ms Samiratu Awudu Abdulai, the Upper Primary award to Mr. Foster Asare, and the Junior High School award went to Mr. Emmanuel Bisah. Additionally, a special recognition award was given to Mr. Daniel Enaman. Other Award winners include Ms. Gifty Amoaha Canteen staff, Jacob and Joshua Nyarko, Cadet Officers.

Reflecting on the school's values, Mrs. Antwi remarked, “According to Aristotle, ‘Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.’ Thanks to the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, our students do not only acquire knowledge but also values that will prepare them for a great future.”

She concluded her address by appreciating parents for their relentless support and urging students to embrace future challenges confidently.

“I challenge you to go out there and shine like the stars and lift the flag of Covenant Presbyterian School High,” she stated.

The event featured a compelling address from Mr. Eugene Nii Adjei Laryea, Regional Manager of Presbyterian Schools for Greater Accra.

Reflecting on the rich history of Presbyterian education, he stated, “The formalized, established, and open school system in Ghana began with the arrival of the Basel Missionaries. It is no surprise that products of Presbyterian schools often stand out due to their discipline, hard work, and cultured way of living.”

He emphasized the essentiality of academic excellence in today’s rapidly changing world, asserting, “A future that depends on well-educated, innovative, and resilient individuals.”

Mr. Laryea elaborated on the myriad challenges facing education, including financial constraints and societal pressures, and underscored the critical role stakeholders—teachers, parents, management, and students—play in navigating these challenges.

He specifically commended the Management and Board of Covenant Presbyterian School for their dedication to providing an environment conducive to learning and called for continued investment in infrastructure to support academic excellence.

In an empowering message to students, he quoted Apostle Paul from Philippians 4:13, stating, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” encouraging them to embrace a resilient mindset in the face of difficulties.

He also urged parents to foster their children’s dreams without imposing their own aspirations on them.

Mr. William Yaw Sakyi-Bekoe, An Architect and Senior Presbyter of the Covenant Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the Chairperson of the event, offered heartfelt congratulations to the Class of 2024.

He encouraged the graduates to view learning as a lifelong journey. “May the knowledge, values, and experiences you’ve gained at Covenant Presbyterian School guide you as you excel in your journey to a higher educational level,” he said.

Mr. Sakyi-Bekoe revealed that discussions are underway between the church and the school Board regarding the expansion of the school to better serve its community.

He concluded with an inspiring message based on Philippians 4:8, urging students to focus on excellence in all aspects of life.

“Wherever you go and whatever challenges you face, always remember, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ May God bless you all, and may your future be great.”

The ceremony brought together parents, educators, and community members in a shared commitment to educational excellence, reiterating the belief that maintaining such standards requires collaboration from all stakeholders.
