Daniel Afriyie Barnieh named among nominees for the 2021 Swag Awards

November 4, 2021

Hearts forward Daniel Afriyie Barnieh has scooped two nominations for the 46th edition of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana(SWAG) Awards.

The 20-year old is among the nominees for the Sports Personality of the Year Award and the Premier League Male Footballer of the Year Award following his exploits for club and country in the just ended season.

The versatile forward guided Hearts to their first domestic double in 21-years, and his brace in the final of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations ensured that Ghana won the AFCON trophy to add to the WAFU tournament they won earlier this year.

“The General Assembly after critiquing the work done by the Awards Nominations Committee, endorsed and approved the final list of top performers for the 2020/21 calendar year which ended in September,” SWAG said in a statement

A cult hero among the Phobian faithfuls, Barnieh’s five goals in the FA Cup ensured that he emerged from the competition as the top-scorer to help Hearts win the trophy.

The youngster’s crucial goal against arch-rivals Kotoko proved decisive as Hearts won the League for the first time in over a decade.

Barnieh is in contention for the Sports Personality of the year award with the National 4X100m Relay Team and the 2020 Olympics Bronze medalist Samuel Takyi of Ghana’s Amateur Boxing team.

He will also vie for the premier league male footballer of the year award with Kotoko’s Ismail Ganiyu and GPL top scorer and former Karela forward, Diawisie Taylor who currently plays his club football in Egypt.

The award which is slated for December this year will also see Coach Samuel Boadu and coach Karim Zito compete for the coach of the year, as is Fatawu Issahaku who is in contention for the Discovery of the year award.
